Unleashing Artistic Creativity on Long-Haul Flights: The Digital Drawing Guide

Writer: Jade ChoungJade Choung

Long-haul flights can often be monotonous and mundane, leaving travelers yearning for ways to pass the time. For creative individuals, these extended journeys offer a unique opportunity to channel their artistic passions through digital drawing. With the aid of modern technology, artists can transform the confined space of an airplane seat into an imaginative haven, producing stunning artworks. If you're lucky, someone in your row might also be tinkering around on a drawing app, and you can ask to do a quick collaboration with them! In this article, we'll explore practical tips on how to be an artistically creative digital drawer during long-haul flights. 1. Choose the Right Digital Drawing Device: Selecting the appropriate digital drawing tool is crucial for a smooth artistic experience during air travel. Laptops with drawing tablets, tablets with styluses, or even advanced smartphones with stylus support are all excellent options, but they can be bulky while limited to a small workspace (the food tray). Pick a device that you are comfortable with and that offers sufficient power and battery life to last the duration of your flight. You may be able to charge your device on the plane, but it is best to have it fully charged upon coming onto the plane. If your device has internet connection, put it on airplane mode and you will be able to use it even during take off.

2. Pre-Load Essential Art Apps: Before embarking on your journey, ensure that your chosen device has the necessary art applications installed and updated. Many popular drawing apps like Procreate, Adobe Fresco, Autodesk SketchBook, or Clipstudio Paint offer versatile features and an array of brushes to suit different styles. A long flight is also a great time to try out a new application too!

3. Pack the Right Accessories: In addition to your digital drawing device, bring along extra styluses, charging cables, a drawing glove, and a portable power bank to avoid any interruptions in your creative process. A comfortable neck pillow and an adjustable stand or holder can enhance your drawing experience and help you maintain a good posture throughout the flight. I also bring a travel blanket that doubles as a back pillow to help me with comfort. *Check out the one I have here!

4. Seek Inspiration from books and more: While on flights, I enjoy downloading e-books related to art, staring at screenshots of beautiful artwork, and also watching downloaded videos on Skillshare and Domestika which offer creative classes!

5. Engage with In-Flight Magazines and Media: Many airlines provide in-flight magazines and entertainment, which can be a source of inspiration. Flip through the glossy pages and observe illustrations, photographs, and graphic designs to spark your creative juices.

6. Embrace Digital Sketching: One of the advantages of digital drawing is the ability to sketch freely without wasting paper. Use the initial phase of your flight to create rough sketches and explore various ideas before diving into a detailed piece. 7. Experiment with Different Techniques: Long-haul flights offer ample time for experimentation. Try out various digital drawing techniques, such as layering, blending, and using different brushes. Delve into the infinite possibilities of digital art to discover your unique artistic style.

8. Document Your Travel Experience: Consider using your artistic talents to create a visual travel journal. Illustrate your feelings, experiences, and encounters during the flight and destination. This artistic documentation will preserve your memories in a way that no photograph can fully capture.

9. Connect with Fellow Artists Onboard: Chances are, you won't be the only artist on the flight. Engage in conversations with fellow creative minds, share ideas, and perhaps collaborate on a joint digital artwork. This interaction can foster creativity and introduce you to new perspectives.

10. Practice Patience and Enjoy the Process: Remember, art is a journey, and it's essential to embrace the creative process rather than obsessing over the final outcome. Allow yourself to make mistakes, experiment, and enjoy the act of drawing without the pressure of perfection.

In conclusion, long-haul flights need not be a period of idle boredom; instead, they can be an artistic sanctuary where your creativity flourishes. Armed with the right tools, inspiration from the surroundings, and a willingness to explore, you can transform your journey into a productive and gratifying artistic experience. Happy drawing!
