FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN DRAWING?
I have drawn scribbles here and there as a teenager. Around 8 years ago, I started to practice more and more with digital tools.
WHAT TABLET DO YOU USE?
I have a Wacom Cintiq Companion 2 (in China), but I now mainly using my iPad Pro for drawing.
WHAT TABLETS HAVE YOU USED?
My first tablet was the Wacom Bamboo Fun. After that one, I moved into the Intuos line from Wacom, and then I discovered the Cintiq 22” which I loved. After that, I got the Wacom Cintiq Companion 2 which I have now.
WHAT SOFTWARE AND APPS DO YOU USE?
On my Wacom, I use both ClipStudioPaint (CSP) and Photoshop. On my iPad Pro, I mainly use Procreate, and occasionally CSP and Adobe Photoshop. I draw the the 2nd generation Apple Pencil.
DID YOU GO TO SCHOOL FOR ART?
I took a couple classes online at the Academy of Art in San Francisco, but I didn’t feel it was for me at the time and pursued a degree education later on.
DO YOU THINK YOU’LL EVER CHANGE YOUR CAREER PATH TO FOCUS ON ART?
I do! I combine my career as an educator and an artist together. The coolest thing is my employer, Keystone Academy, recognizes my skills and highly supports it. Shout out to them!
WHAT GOT YOU INTO ANIME?
When I was young, I watched a lot of Pokémon, Monster Rancher, Digimon, and Sailor Moon!
WHAT MADE YOU LIKE ART?
My mom was creative, and I think that influenced me at a young age. We also always checked out the maximum number of books at the library because I went through them so quickly for reading and for adoring the art. Also, my uncle, Dru, let me play on Paint on his computer, and I guess that sparked an interest in digital art from there! After that discovery, I went onto Neopets and started drawing Neopets on my first tablet!
DO YOU DO TRADITIONAL ART?
Rarely! Sometimes I draw on a sketch pad, and I used to work with comics, but, now, for the most part, I only draw digitally.
HOW DO YOU GET INSPIRED?
Pinterest definitely inspires me, and so do videos on YouTube. If I soak in art, I end up producing it. My son and loved ones always say silly things and it makes me want to draw them out in comic panels! I also like to watch animations and look at art books to get in a creative groove.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ORIGINAL CHARACTERS (OC)?
Yes, Mae Reed (Pokémon), Roy Blackwell (Pokémon), Mia, and Reka.
DO YOU HAVE A STYLE?
I have a handful of "styles" - I joke and say I'm the bender of styles! Seriously speaking though, I, more-so, have a 'coloring' style rather than one drawing style. I believe my style has "changed" throughout the years. I draw anime related artwork a specific way. I am now refining my cartoon/kid-lit style; I am challenging myself to bring in more creative elements and color theory into larger art projects. As for coloring, I typically color with bright colors or colors with well-defined contrast.
DO YOU DRAW FOR A LIVING?
At this time, I am a teacher of ESL (English as a Second Language). I host a Digital Art After-school Activity and do freelance illustration work.
